Tips for Birding

The Outdoor Education Trail is adjacent to the parking lot for the Washington County Career Center. The public is welcome to explore these trails, and it is clear that the local community does so; on nice days you will see other visitors. A large map at the trailhead is helpful. Parking is available around the Washington County Career Center building; the trailhead is on the left side of the building from the highway.

About a mile and a half of trails are built around the head of a ravine where several creeks come together, cascading over high sandstone cliffs. The terrain on the trails is, therefore, steep. Muddy spots can be a bit slippery. One avoidable trail section features a rope to hang on to! Most of the habitat is upland forest, but there is a large meadow portion on the back side of the trail system and a small wetland. The birding is good, but the scenery alone makes this area worth visiting. An old quarry features a pile of abandoned stone mill grinding wheels. Amazing!
