Ohio Birding Day Hikes

Marion Tallgrass Trail Trailheads
The Marion Tallgrass Trail provides hiking and bike access through the Big Island Wildlife Area. There are two trailhead parking areas that provide access to the trail for those who wish to hike and see birds, one at Holland Road and another at Decliff Road.

There are eBird hotspots for each section of the trail.

Holland Road Trailhead

The eastern section of the trail from the Holland Road Trailhead to OH-203 is 1.7 miles. This is a good way to experience the area on foot. In this section the trail passes the Marion Community Foundation Lake. Going out or coming back you can walk around the lake. This out and back hike is 3.7 miles including the walk around the lake

The Tallgrass Trail is 2 miles from OH-203 to Espyville Road and 2.6 miles from Espyville Road to Agosta-Meeker Road. Each of these may be hiked separately or to make a longer hike.

Decliff Road Trailhead

There are two eBird hotspots which use the Decliff Road Trailhead. Going east of Decliff Road it is 2 miles from Augusta-Meeker Road to Decliff Road. Going west of Decliff Road it is 2 miles from Decliff Road to LaRue-Marseilles Road.

About Marion Tallgrass Trail
The Marion Tallgrass Trail reached the Hardin County line in late 2017, a distance of 12.44 miles from the eastern trailhead site at 2093 Holland Road West, just west of Marion. The trail follows the former Erie-Lackawanna railroad, which was abandoned in 1976.

In the first mile, visitors can find trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and a beaver lodge as the trail follows the shore of a 53-acre lake. The trail then crosses an open area before crossing OH-203 and entering the beautiful Big Island Wildlife Area.

A paved parking area is available at the trailhead, and there is also a grassy Ohio Department of Natural Resources parking lot just south of the trail on OH-203. Volunteers are working to extend a primitive hiking trail, which now goes to Agosta-Meeker Road.

Well-behaved dogs are permitted if on leashes, but we ask that you pick up their waste. The park closes at dusk (30 minutes after sunset). Horses and motor vehicles are not permitted on the trail.

The trail passes through the Big Island Wildlife Area, and the entire trail will have a delightful mix of shade and open areas.
