The Jack McDowell Nature Preserve is near West Jefferson High School and is located adjacent to the Jack McDowell Athletic Complex on Converse Road. The nature center includes a patch of woods with a stream, a small prairie area, and a good-sized pond. Unimproved grass paths run through the area, about a mile in total. The preserve is bordered by the athletic park, railroad tracks, and an agricultural field.
