Tips for birding James Day Park
The parking at James Day Park is gravel. From the parking area, you can enter an asphalt path which encircles a hill. There is playground equipment on the north side of this hill. If you veer off asphalt path just past wooden picnic shelter you can follow French Creek until you reach a double-trunked sycamore tree with a “peek a boo” hole in the base (see photo). Just past sycamore is worn, dirt path which enters woods. This dirt path meanders through woods, alongside French Creek, until you reach the turnaround point at the base of a tree root covered dirt hill. There is an open grassy area beyond the ball fields on east side of park. Birds which seem to be regulars are Carolina Wrens, woodpeckers, Northern Cardinals, White-breasted Nuthatch. Spring birds have been Eastern Phoebe along steep creek wall, Red-eyed Vireo, Acadian and Great-crested Flycatchers, Scarlet Tanager, a surprise Summer Tanager, Eastern Kingbird, Swainson’s Thrush, Turkey Vulture flyovers, Northern Rough-winged Swallows along creek. Some beautiful wildflowers and interesting hardwood tree species can also be seen. More species will hopefully be found as this location is explored more.
