Tips for birding Wolf Run Regional Park
There is one main parking lot for Wolf Run Regional Park on Yauger Road. The park is 260 acres and has about 10 miles of hiking trails. The trails traverse four areas of meadow and fields. The park provides access to Knox Woods which is a state nature preserve. Most of the time is not necessary to carry a scope here although we sometimes find a distant hawk. Woodpeckers are abundant — Pileated, Hairy, Downy, Flickers, Red-bellied, and some Sapsuckers. There are areas in the north section of the park where several ecosystems (old and young forest, brush, and meadows and fields) converge and these tend to be good locations to see birds.

About Wolf Run Regional Park
Located one mile east of Mount Vernon on Yauger Road, Wolf Run serves as a convenient place to relax and take in the beauty the Kokosing River valley. Of note is the 30 acre Knox Woods State Nature Preserve, contained within the park’s boundary.

The state endangered Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a small woodpecker, utilizes wooded habitat in the park for foraging and shelter. Granite boulders carried by Ohio’s last ice age 100,000 years ago dot the landscape. Small streams that comprise the headwaters of Wolf Run, which flows into the Kokosing River, grace the landscape with soothing sounds of cascading water.
