About this Location

The grounds of the Pioneer Church Area are open seasonally during daylight hours, from late Spring until about Labor Day. There is a small parking area off Indian Creek Road (gated when the park is closed). The tree-shaded parking area is a good spot to look and listen, then walk up the driveway to the church and cemetery. The shaded lawn and cemetery is surrounded by woods, and Indian Creek is near enough to perhaps see or hear a kingfisher or heron. There is an old (but usable) outhouse behind the church on the southeast side. Look for a phoebe nest in the roof of the outhouse or along the sides of the church. There is a picnic table by the cemetery. This area is very lightly visited; often you’ll be the only one there. Walking along Indian Creek Road is also good for a variety of habitats, watch for light but sometimes fast moving traffic.

About Indian Creek MetroPark

This 135-acre scenic natural area has been described as one of Ohio’s finest small parks. About one mile of Indian Creek flows through the park, between heavily wooded hillsides and bluffs with rock outcroppings, separating the property into distinct areas accessed by two different entrances. The park’s varied landscape is covered by 26 species of native trees and a wide variety of wildflowers in season while offering opportunities for fossil hunting and other nature study activities. The Indian Mound Trail leads visitors to a reconstructed Native American earthwork. Picnic sites may be found throughout the grounds, and a covered picnic shelter may be reserved for group outings.
